Winter go home

Sunshine and shadows on the snow The old saying goes “in like a lion, out like a lamb” but I think winter has it all reversed this year.  Mr. Groundhog wasn’t kidding when he said there was more to come.  Winter seems to be acting like a fireworks show and setting off its biggest and bestest for the very end.

Playing in the snow on a homemade sledI do love the snow.  I love watching it fall.  I love the soft sound of snowflakes finding their resting spot on a quiet night.  I love how a snowy night is so bright even without the moon.  Sledding.  Snow cream.  Snow days.

Making snow creamWe found that while snow is something we love and camping is something we love, we don’t necessarily love doing them together.

Snow covered yurt at Lake Degray State Park in ArkansasWe arrived at our yurt site and there was a good few inches of snow from a snowfall earlier int he week.  When I made these reservations at the first of the year, I never expected my south Arkansas college town would be blanketed in snow and ice at the end of February.

But it’s March now.

Garden beds under snowI’m ready to start my garden.  I have a few seedlings in the kitchen staying warm by the coffee pot and my new cold frames need to be finished and readied for some early greens.  Spring is coming and I know summer will be here before we know it and we will lament the warm temperatures and dream of snow.  But to everything there is a season and its time for Winter to go home.

Children here will finally be back in school tomorrow after several more missed days due to snow this past week.Your little daffodils are holding up well in spite of the weather. I’m afraid all this snow has me yearning for spring too. I’m not as tough as the little flowers.

Great pictures, and the bit about snow cream-Ha! We had warm weather the last few days and it was a tease, but it sure did get me wanting spring even more. What is inside the Yurt? Ive never heard of one. Thanks for the article.

Hi Matt. A yurt is a tent like structure that’s a bit more permanent. There are bunks inside with a folding table and chairs. They come with box fans as well but we sure didn’t need one this weekend. There’s a light and an electrical outlet. Which we gladly plugged in our tiny electric heater. Check out my post on glamping that I did last summer. It has more photos of inside the yurt. They are certainly the way to go for when you want to get out in nature for a few days but don’t want to worry about a tent.
